How IELTS Scoring Works
The overall band score is the average of all four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Overall Band = Round to nearest 0.5 ( (L + R + W + S) / 4 )
What is the IELTS Band Score?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) uses a 9-band scale to measure English proficiency. Each section — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — is scored individually, and the overall band score is the average rounded to the nearest half band.
IELTS Band Score Rounding Rules
If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
IELTS Score Requirements for Study Abroad
Most universities require an overall band of 6.0–7.5. UK universities typically need 6.5+, Australian universities accept 6.0+, and top US/Canadian programs often require 7.0+. Always check individual program requirements.
