What is the difference between active and history backlogs?
Active backlogs are subjects you have not yet cleared. History backlogs are subjects you failed once but have since cleared. Most companies care about active backlogs at the time of appearing for the placement process.
Can I sit for placements with backlogs?
It depends on the company. Many mass recruiters like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro require zero active backlogs at the time of joining. Some companies allow 1-2 active backlogs during the hiring process but require them to be cleared before the joining date.
Does GATE allow students with backlogs?
Yes. GATE has no restriction on backlogs for appearing in the exam. You only need to be in the final year or have completed your degree. However, for IIT/NIT M.Tech admission, you typically need to have completed your degree (all backlogs cleared) before the admission deadline.
Do history backlogs matter for jobs?
Some companies (like TCS and Cognizant) have a limit on total history backlogs. Others only check active backlogs. Product-based companies rarely ask about backlogs and focus more on skills and DSA rounds.
What about ATKT vs backlog — are they the same?
ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) is the Mumbai University term for backlog. If you have an ATKT, it means you have a backlog in that subject. The terms are interchangeable in practice.
