SGPA Calculator

Calculate your Semester Grade Point Average (out of 10).

Formula

SGPA is the weighted sum of grade points in each course divided by total credits:

SGPA = Σ (Gradei × Creditsi) / Σ Creditsi

SGPA vs CGPA

Point SGPA CGPA
ScopeOne semester. All completed semesters or all completed credits.
FormulaSum of subject credits x grade points divided by semester credits.Sum of semester SGPA x semester credits divided by total credits.
Used forSemester performance, merit lists, immediate improvement tracking.Placements, admissions, scholarships, final transcript reporting.
SensitivityChanges sharply based on one semester's subjects.Changes slowly as more credits are completed.

How to Calculate SGPA from Individual Subject Grades

  1. List every subject registered in the semester.
  2. Write the credits for each subject from your syllabus or marksheet.
  3. Convert each letter grade into grade points using your university grade table.
  4. Multiply credits by grade points for every subject.
  5. Add all weighted grade points and divide by total semester credits.

Worked Example with 6 Subjects

Operating Systems4A832
Database Systems3O1030

Open Elective3A824

Total credits = 19. Total weighted points = 163. SGPA = 163 / 19 = 8.58.

University-Specific SGPA Calculations

VTU

VTU SGPA is calculated as sum of course credits x grade points divided by total course credits. Older percentage conversion commonly uses (SGPA or CGPA - 0.75) x 10; newer schemes may differ.

Anna University

Anna University GPA/SGPA is credit weighted. Grade mapping depends on regulation, so use the grade point table printed in the applicable regulation or conversion certificate guidance.

Mumbai University

Mumbai engineering students often see SGPI rather than SGPA. It is still a semester-level credit-weighted index, while CGPI is the cumulative value.

Autonomous colleges

Autonomous colleges may set their own grade ranges, audit-course treatment, and fail-grade policy. The weighted-average structure is common, but the inputs must match your regulation.

SGPA to Percentage Conversion

Anna UniversityOften shown as GPA/CGPA x 10 in recent guidanceOfficial applications may ask for a conversion certificate.

Generic 10-point scaleSGPA x 9.5 or SGPA x 10This is only an estimate unless your university confirms it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in all subjects registered in one semester.

How is SGPA different from CGPA?

SGPA is calculated for one semester only. CGPA is the cumulative average across all completed semesters or all completed course credits.

How do I calculate SGPA from subject grades?

Convert each subject grade to its grade point, multiply by subject credits, add all weighted grade points, and divide by total semester credits.

Can I calculate SGPA from marks directly?

Usually no. First convert marks into the letter grade or grade point according to your university's grade table, then apply the credit-weighted SGPA formula.

Does SGPA include failed subjects?

Most universities count failed subjects with zero grade points or the fail-grade value for that attempt. The subject's credits still affect the denominator unless your regulation says otherwise.

How do I convert SGPA into CGPA?

Use a credit-weighted average of all semester SGPAs: CGPA = sum of SGPA x semester credits divided by total completed credits.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

Use your university's official conversion formula. Examples include VTU older schemes using (SGPA or CGPA - 0.75) x 10, Anna University often using a published conversion certificate/formula, and many autonomous colleges using CGPA x 10 or x 9.5.

Is SGPA the same as GPA?

In many Indian universities, SGPA means semester GPA. Some universities call it GPA, SGPI, or SPI, but the credit-weighted semester calculation is usually similar.

What is a good SGPA?

An SGPA above 8 is generally strong, 7 to 8 is usually comfortable for many placement cutoffs, and below 6 may need improvement depending on your branch, backlog status, and university rules.

Can one high SGPA fix a low CGPA?

It can improve CGPA, but the jump depends on completed credits. If you already completed many credits, one semester has a smaller effect than it would in first or second year.
