SPI Calculator
Calculate your Semester Performance Index (out of 10).
Formula
SPI is the weighted sum of grade points in each course divided by total credits:
SPI = Σ (Gradei × Creditsi) / Σ Creditsi SPI vs CGPA vs CPI
| Metric | Full form | What it measures | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPI | Semester Performance Index | One semester's credit-weighted grade points. | Semester result analysis, scholarship checks, backlog impact for that term. |
| CGPA | Cumulative Grade Point Average | Overall academic average across completed semesters or all courses. | Placements, higher studies, eligibility cutoffs, final transcript summary. |
| CPI | Cumulative Performance Index | Running cumulative performance index, commonly used by GTU and similar systems. | Final performance reporting where the university uses CPI instead of CGPA. |
How Different Universities Calculate SPI
GTU
GTU commonly uses SPI for semester performance and CPI for cumulative performance. The calculation is credit weighted: sum of credit x grade point divided by total semester credits.
VTU
VTU typically calls the semester value SGPA, but the logic is the same as SPI: subject credits multiplied by grade points, divided by total registered credits.
Mumbai University
Mumbai University engineering marksheets often use SGPI for semester performance and CGPI for cumulative performance. SGPI is calculated from credit points earned in that semester.
Autonomous colleges
Autonomous institutes may use SPI, SGPA, GPA, or SGPI. The formula is usually the same, but grade-point mapping, audit courses, pass/fail courses, and backlog treatment can differ.
Worked Example
| Subject | Credits | Grade point | Credits x grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | 9 | 36 |
| Data Structures | 4 | 8 | 32 |
| Digital Electronics | 3 | 7 | 21 |
| Physics Lab | 2 | 10 | 20 |
| Communication Skills | 2 | 8 | 16 |
| Mini Project | 3 | 9 | 27 |
Total credits = 18. Total weighted grade points = 152. SPI = 152 / 18 = 8.44.
SPI to Percentage Conversion by University
| University | Common formula | Example for 8.0 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTU | (SPI - 0.5) x 10 | 75% | Often applied to CPI/CGPA-style conversion. |
| VTU older schemes | (SGPA or CGPA - 0.75) x 10 | 72.5% | Some newer schemes use CGPA x 10; verify your scheme. |
| Mumbai engineering | Older CGPI formulas used 7.1/7.4 multipliers plus a constant | Varies by rule | Current conversion may require an official certificate from raw marks. |
| Generic colleges | CGPA x 9.5 or CGPA x 10 | 76% or 80% | Use only for estimates unless your university publishes it. |
Common SPI Calculation Mistakes
- Using marks directly instead of converting marks to grade points first.
- Taking a simple average of grade points and ignoring credits.
- Dropping failed or backlog subjects when the regulation counts them as zero grade points.
- Mixing internal marks, external marks, and final grade points in the same calculation.
- Using another university's percentage conversion formula for official applications.
- Forgetting that audit, non-credit, and pass/fail courses may not affect SPI.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SPI the same as SGPA?
In many Indian engineering universities, SPI and SGPA mean almost the same thing: the credit-weighted grade point average for one semester. Some universities prefer the term SPI, while others use SGPA or SGPI. Always use the term printed on your marksheet for official forms.
How do I calculate SPI manually?
Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits, add all those weighted grade points, and divide by total credits. For example, if the weighted total is 174 and total credits are 21, SPI is 174 / 21 = 8.29.
Does a 4-credit subject affect SPI more than a 2-credit subject?
Yes. SPI is credit weighted, so a 4-credit subject has twice the impact of a 2-credit subject. Improving grades in high-credit theory, lab, or project subjects usually moves SPI more than improving low-credit electives.
How is SPI different from CPI?
SPI measures one semester only. CPI is the cumulative performance index across all completed semesters and is usually calculated from all earned credits and grade points so far.
How is SPI different from CGPA?
SPI is semester-level, while CGPA is programme-level or cumulative. CGPA may be calculated from all course credits directly or from semester SPI/SGPA values weighted by semester credits.
Can I average all subject grade points without credits?
Only if every subject has the same credit value. If credits differ, a simple average gives the wrong SPI because it treats a 1-credit subject and a 4-credit subject equally.
Should failed subjects be included in SPI?
Most universities include failed or backlog courses with zero grade points or the grade point assigned to the fail grade for that attempt. The exact treatment can differ, so check your university regulation before using the number for official planning.
How do I convert SPI to percentage?
There is no single national SPI to percentage rule. Common formulas include GTU percentage = (SPI - 0.5) x 10, older VTU schemes = (SGPA or CGPA - 0.75) x 10, and Mumbai University engineering's older CGPI formula. Use your university's latest circular or conversion certificate for official use.
Can a high SPI improve my CGPA quickly?
Yes, but the effect depends on remaining credits. A high SPI in a semester with many credits improves CGPA more than the same SPI in a low-credit semester.
What is a good SPI in college?
An SPI above 8 is generally strong for placements and higher studies, while 7 to 8 is usually safe for many eligibility cutoffs. Competitive scholarships, branch changes, or top recruiters may expect higher scores.
